I know that we all have so many daunting obligations before us. These obligations seem to be growing rather than diminishing. We have family expectations, community engagements, work pressures and more. And I know that for many of us those obligations seem to grow into a nearly unmanageable mass of overwhelming anxiety. I have seen my share of deer in the headlights expressions when I ask for commitments from people. This is why we use this season to encourage a season of rest. We need to learn how to rest without shame and with great courage. God himself commands us to do that. I actually believe that rest is commanded not because we need to do less, but because God knows we have a tendency to make much of ourselves. Some of us have a need to perform or prove ourselves. Some us us need to control our environments. Some of us are simply afraid of what might happen if we slow down and sit still for too long. All of us need to learn that we are not actually in the driver’s seat of our lives. All of us need to learn to trust God more with our time, our money, our plans, hopes, and dreams. As I was reading ahead for the sermon this Sunday I was reading the song that Moses and the people sing in Exodus 15 after the Egyptians are killed in the “Red Sea Incident.” Their song is a song of praise to God after they have seen him meet their needs. This is good and glorious and wonderful. But we don’t have (or we don’t notice) a lot of “Red Sea Incidents” in our sanitized and cleaned up Western World. The American Dream has made trust in God SEEM unnecessary. At least on the surface of most of our lives. And I think it is because of this that all the literature I read agrees that Discipleship (the first and most important call on the mission of the church) is suffering in our culture. I firmly believe that rest is a step toward discipleship. And I also believe my next challenge will be a similar step toward discipleship for some of us. It has been at least 20 years since our church body has met its annual anticipated giving. In our budgeting process we usually look at what we would like to spend, but then we end up spending far less than we actually planned to because we receive far less than we actually wanted. This year is different. This year we are closer than I have seen in my 8 years of being with you. This year, I know we can do it. Based on what our resident expert, Troy Reno is telling me, when you look at regular giving, scheduled giving, and what is normal, we are going to be about $7,000 short of meeting our anticipated income this year. I know that might seem like a high number, but if we spread that around our congregation it actually isn’t that much at all. So, consider giving a little more this week. If you have not given in awhile, consider making up some of that difference with a one time gift. If you are able, please consider helping us overcome this shortage and celebrate a better budget year than we have in recent memory. Please hear me though. I know God will take care of us, we really will be ok. But let me tell you what I know just as surely: God wants us to grow in our discipleship. He wants us to trust him more. He wants us to all know in our bones that God meets the needs of his people. And the way we grow in our discipleship is by risking and seeing him come through for us. What is the risk? What is your fear? God will rise to meet your challenges. Let’s let him show us. Not so that we can simply make budget this year, which would be a huge reason to celebrate, but so that he can move us forward in our discipleship as individuals and as a church. If you’re in and you are ready to see God do something special, something he hasn’t done in awhile here, let us know it. This helps us continue our efforts toward self-sustainability for the Jemo Partnership families. Over the course of six banquets, we have raised $73,175.77 to help the Jemo community accomplish much needed infrastructure, classrooms & income generating training. We have officially transitioned to One 10a service for the summer. We will relaunch coffee corner, Sun. morning & Wed. evening discipleship classes in Sep. Throughout the summer there will be kids moments OR kids dismissals & the nursery will always be open. Needs food items donated (bring to foyer area). Traveling every 2nd Sunday of the month. *Jemo Partnership. Team traveled to Ethiopia in March. Had the Jemo lunch & the Jemo banquet. Raised $$$ for IGAs. Upcoming UNSPOKEN concert at BCC on Thu. evening July 18th. *Jeanette Myhre Initiative. Has five core volunteers volunteering at Myhre weekly in Kindergareten & 2nd grade classes. 5th Grade basketball team is using BCC's gym on Thu. afternoons. Community Carnival coming up. *Young Lives. Relationally investing into students at South Central HS. Gearing up for upcoming summer camps. Currently have six young mothers who are fully funded for summer camps. Grab a prayer sheet at the info desk. *John & Kara Telenga. Will be doing missions work at Wesley Acres this summer. *Naomi Rust with Athletes in Action. Will be heading to South Africa this next year. *Make Way Partners. Joined forces with Lift Up the Vulnerable. Focuses on helping orphans in South Sudan & Sudan. *KNDR. Had their spring share-a-thon this last week. *Remaining Funds. The Missions team had some remaining funds toward the end of their budget year, so we sent some additional funds to Heaven’s Helpers Soup Kitchen, KNDR, the Telengas & Naomi Rust. *Have a new missions idea?
